On January 29, 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the international standard ISO 8100-11:2026 Lifts for the transport of persons and goods — Part 11: Code for seismic design and installation of lifts, which is the world's first unified international standard for seismic design of elevators. The core contents of the standard include: First, it has established a globally unified seismic design grading system for elevators. According to the seismic intensity of different regions, the seismic grade of elevators is divided into 5 grades, and the design, material and installation requirements corresponding to different grades are clarified. Second, it refines the seismic design requirements of the core components of the elevator, and formulates special seismic design and strength calculation standards for guide rails, cars, counterweights, suspension systems, safety components, and electrical control systems. Third, it standardizes the test method and acceptance standard of elevator seismic performance, and clarifies the process and judgment criteria of seismic simulation test and on-site seismic performance inspection. Fourth, it clarifies the safety assessment and re-use requirements of elevators after earthquakes, and formulates a standardized process for comprehensive inspection, fault repair and performance re-evaluation of elevators after earthquakes. Fifth, it has formulated special technical specifications and acceptance standards for seismic reinforcement and transformation of existing elevators. After its release, the standard has been adopted as the core reference document for the revision of national standards by earthquake-prone countries such as Japan, the United States, China and New Zealand, promoting the unification and upgrading of global elevator seismic technology.
