On November 20, 2025, the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China officially issued the national standard GB/T 47200-2025 Technical Specification for Existing Elevator Renovation, which will be officially implemented on May 1, 2026. This standard is the first special national standard covering all types and whole processes in the field of existing elevator renovation in China. The core contents include: First, clarify the scope of application of the standard, covering partial renovation, overall renovation, upgrading renovation, and safety performance improvement renovation of in-use passenger elevators, freight elevators, escalators, moving walks, home elevators, and special elevators, applicable to the whole process of design, construction, inspection and acceptance of renovation projects. Second, establish a classification system for existing elevator renovation. According to the renovation content and scope, the existing elevator renovation is divided into four grades: safety renovation, performance renovation, overall renovation, and intelligent renovation. Differentiated technical requirements and acceptance criteria are formulated for different grades. Third, refine the pre-renovation assessment requirements for existing elevators, clarify the content and methods of safety performance assessment, technical condition assessment and applicability assessment that must be carried out before renovation, formulate the renovation feasibility judgment criteria, and strictly prohibit the renovation of elevators with major potential safety hazards and no renovation value. Fourth, standardize the design requirements for existing elevator renovation, formulate special design guidelines for the renovation of elevator mechanical systems, electrical systems, control systems, safety protection devices, door systems, and drive systems, and clarify that the renovated elevators must meet the requirements of current national elevator safety standards. Fifth, add special requirements for intelligent renovation of existing elevators, formulate special technical specifications for the renovation of elevator intelligent monitoring, remote operation and maintenance, intelligent call, IoT access, and network security, and clarify the functional safety and network security requirements of intelligent renovation. Sixth, refine the construction and process control requirements for existing elevator renovation, formulate standardized specifications for the renovation construction process, safety management, quality control and process inspection, and clarify the qualification requirements of construction units and the certificate requirement for construction personnel. Seventh, standardize the acceptance requirements for existing elevator renovation, formulate a standardized process for complete machine performance test, safety function verification, load test and on-site inspection after renovation, and improve the qualification criteria and acceptance document requirements for renovation projects. Eighth, standardize the use and maintenance requirements of the renovated elevator, clarify the requirements for use registration, technical file update, and maintenance plan adjustment of the renovated elevator, to ensure the long-term safe operation of the renovated elevator. The release of this standard fills the gap of unified national standards in the field of existing elevator renovation in China, provides a unified technical basis for the renovation and upgrading of old elevators nationwide, and comprehensively standardizes the development of the existing elevator renovation industry.
