The EU Machinery Regulation was officially adopted in June 2023, aiming to improve the safety level of machinery products, simplify compliance procedures, and strengthen market supervision. Compared with the old directive, the main changes of the new regulation include:

1) Directly applicable to all member states without the need for national transposition;

2) Strengthened manufacturer responsibilities, requiring the establishment of a full product lifecycle traceability system;

3) Increased powers of market surveillance authorities, allowing the detention of suspicious products at borders;

4) Introduced the concept of "economic operators", clarifying the responsibilities of importers and distributors;

5) Updated the essential health and safety requirements for machinery products.


For the elevator industry, elevators and lifts with speeds not exceeding 0.15m/s will be governed by this regulation instead of the Lifts Directive (2014/33/EU).
