In February 2026, the ISO/TC 178 Technical Committee of the International Organization for Standardization officially issued the international standard ISO/TS 8102-21:2026 Electrical requirements for lifts, escalators and moving walks — Part 21: On-site and off-site software updates, with the standard number ISO/TS 8102-21:2026. It is the world's first special international standard for the safety of elevator software updates, applicable to all kinds of elevator, escalator and moving walk equipment newly installed after the release of the standard. The core contents of the standard include: First, clarify the scope of application of the standard, covering on-site and remote software updates of control systems, safety systems and monitoring systems of elevators, escalators and moving walks, including all scenarios such as firmware updates, function upgrades, vulnerability fixes, and configuration changes. Second, establish a safety management framework for the whole life cycle of software updates, and standardize the safety requirements for the whole process of software update demand definition, development and testing, release and review, deployment and implementation, verification and confirmation, and document archiving. Third, refine the safety technical requirements for software updates, clarify the mandatory technical standards for identity authentication, authority control, data encryption, integrity verification, tamper prevention, and fault rollback of software updates, to prevent safety risks in the process of software updates. Fourth, standardize the special requirements for remote software updates, and formulate special safety guidelines for network security protection, access control, two-way identity authentication, encrypted transmission, and emergency cut-off for remote update scenarios, to prevent network attacks and illegal intrusions. Fifth, clarify the test and verification requirements for software updates, and formulate the standardized process and qualification criteria for laboratory testing, on-site testing, function verification and safety verification before software updates. Sixth, standardize the document and record management requirements for software updates, clarify the archiving requirements for version management, change records, test reports and operation logs of software updates, the retention period is not less than the remaining service life of the equipment, to realize the traceability of the whole process of software updates. After its release, the standard has been adopted as an industry technical specification by many countries and regions around the world such as the European Union, China and the United States, comprehensively improving the software security and network security protection level of global smart elevators.
