On October 22, 2025, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) officially issued the 2025 revised version of ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, which comprehensively upgraded the seismic design requirements for elevators, and will officially take effect on April 1, 2026. The core upgrades of this revision for elevator seismic design include: First, it has established an elevator seismic design grading system. According to the seismic intensity of different regions, the seismic grade of elevators is divided into 4 grades, and the design, material and installation requirements corresponding to different grades are clarified. Second, it refines the seismic design requirements of the core components of the elevator, and formulates special seismic design and strength calculation standards for guide rails, cars, counterweights, suspension systems, safety components, and electrical control systems. Third, it upgrades the test and acceptance requirements for the seismic performance of elevators, and clarifies the process and judgment criteria of seismic simulation tests and on-site seismic performance inspections. Fourth, it adds technical specifications for seismic reinforcement and transformation of existing elevators, and clarifies the design, construction and acceptance standards for seismic reinforcement of old elevators. Fifth, it standardizes the safety assessment and re-use requirements of elevators after earthquakes, and formulates a standardized process for comprehensive inspection, fault repair and performance re-evaluation of elevators after earthquakes. After the standard takes effect, it has been incorporated into national mandatory regulations by North American countries such as the United States and Canada, and has become the core compliance guideline for elevator seismic design in North America.
